Friend has a herniated disk that (something with the sciatica) that pulls his hamstring and is very painful all day long. He did physical therapy (did nothing for him) and is on pain medication. What else is there to do? Any certain massage techniques? acupuncture? chiropractor?….. certain supplements? He doesnt get in to see the doctor for another week…

What did he do in physical therapy? There are many different approaches in PT and perhaps he had one that is not the most appropriate for him.
I would recommend someone who has a certification in mechanical diagnosis and therapy. This is the most evidenced based treatment available for this. Unfortunately, not many people know this method of assessment. Go to http://www.mckenziemdt.org
If he cannot be helped conservatively, it will be known within a few visits.
Chiropractic might be helpful if the DC includes self management strategies. Massage therapy will provide only temporary relief. Accupunture is not proven to help. Sometimes epidural steroid injections combined with physical therapy is more successful as well.

Sciatica is different from a disc herniation.
As a massage therapists I work with both all the time. Have him find a massage therapists who does structural integration work or orthopedic massage.
Acupuncture also works very well with this kind of thing.
Chiropractic could help too.
A combination of all of these things usually works the fastest.

It probably is not a hamstring. That is what sciatica pain feels like. Here are a few links you should share with your friendhttp://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hemorrh…
