Hi there, i am a physiotherapist in the UK so hopefully can answer your question!
Firstly there are many tests to perform when assessing the knee, none of which i might add are conclusive in themselves, but make up pieces of a jigsaw, which when put together with all the other findings, make a diagnosis.
You physio ask you many questions regarding how you injured your knee, your symptoms, pain patterns etc. He will also ask you bout your medical history, hobbies, occupation etc to build an accurate picture of you as a person.
He will then go one to physically examine you. This will involve an assessment of your lower back, hips and ankles as well as the knee. He will be looking at range of movement, muscle power, nervous structures and individual anatomical structures such as ligaments, meniscus etc.
He should then explain his findings and possible diagnosis.
If it is a torn cartilage he may refer you for a MRI scan or refer you for an ortho opinion.
The routine treatment is arthroscopic surgery.
Hope this helps.
