I have a herniated disc in the C4/C5 region and a bulging disc below it. I have tried physical therapy, acupuncture, ice packs, heat packs – but nothing seems to relieve the pain. Any suggestions?

Rest is actually the worst thing you can do for this condition….
What type of rehab did you have? Just know there are many approaches to physical therapy in the treatment of this type of problem…some much more successful than others. My best recommendation is to see someone who has a certification in mechanial diagnosis and therapy. Go to http://www.mckenziemdt.org
Many people go to doctors for second opinions but never think to go to another therapist. Considering the vast amount of treatment approaches, this is almost necessary.
Certainly, if you’ve gone this route it may be helpful to talk to a pain specialist (as mentioned above) or even a neurosurgeon, depending on your symptoms.

I have a c3/C4 Disk bulge, and several others as well the only thing that seems to help me with my pain management is regular appointments to the pain management clinics where i get injections of steroids. I get what they call an occipital nerve block that is a series of injections in the back of the head which are done under local anesthetic. I have found this to be very helpful and the pain relief is quite substantial. I have included a link which may help. It also helps if you doctor actually gives you a stronger pain medication, if I was in the USA still I would probably not be given the med’s I am given in the UK. My pain in under some control, not 100% but it is better than it was in the states. Good luck!! I know how horrible it can be to be in pain.

I sympathize so much with u…I had the same problem due to a car accident, I went through all the same treatments, Finally in February I had disc replacement surgery on C4/C5, and now I wish I had not done it..I have just as much pain, only it is different now, Before surgery my head always hurt, now its my neck and shoulders and very limited mobility..
The only thing I know to suggest is Biofreeze gel, and pain meds along with muscle relaxers..Also epidural injections might be an option for u…I hope u get better soon…

Goodness. That can be too painful to be true.
Staying in bed, as still as possible, for as long as you can. Doing physical therapy in a pool also helps, since it’s like softer than normal therapy. Or surgery. In the end, only a qualified physician can tell you if you’ll get better without surgery.
Good luck!
