My mom who was 74 died last wednesday..She had empysema for about 10 yrs and for the last 6 yrs she had been on oxygen 24/7….She had been sick on and off since january and had been in the hospital in january for a week with pneumonia and then in a nursing home/rehab center for 6 weeks for physical therapy to get stronger so she could come home…She had been home for about 3 weeks when she went back in the hospital on april 1 cause she was sick again and week and could not eat…They took tests and found out that everything she ate and drank was going to her lungs..When she was in rehab she was getting her food soften in a food processer to make it easier for her to eat cause for months everytime she would eat she would start coughing…When she got home my sister who had always lived with her along with my brother in-law and my sisters daughter who also live there they would also put her food in a food processer…2 days before my mom died they put a feeding tube in her…

Very sorry for your loss. She sounded like she was ready to go she must of been very tired and weak. The disease sounded as if it finally caught up with her. Your Mom was lucky she had so many to care and love her. May you find comfort in knowing that she is not suffering any longer.
Loss of appetite and weight loss. It’s a vicious cycle. Emphysema can make eating more difficult, and the act of eating can rob you of your breath. The result is that you simply may not feel like eating much of the time.
Fatigue. You’re likely to feel tired both because it’s more difficult to breathe and because your body is getting less oxygen.

I am so sorry, this sounds like I wrote it, 7 months ago we buried my dear mother, she’s went down to 80 pounds & was 5′6″ She had a hernia that was lodged up in her upper chest & the food she swallowed went down the esophagus but stopped at the hernia & went back up & emptied into her lungs. She choked and coughed all the time & was always getting pneumonia from the food pieces getting into the lungs. She seemed to be able to drink fluids very slowly, so we fed her mostly Ensure & creamed soups.
There was nothing the doctors could do, she was scheduled for a feeding tube but died a few days before it was to be put in. Your poor mother wouldn’t have gotten any better, only worse, there’s no cure for this, so very sad. I am so very sorry for your loss. JoJo
