My boyfriend of 6 years started getting crippling back pain. He dosen’t have any insurance. I know some really great people and Spectrum Diagnostics gave us 2 CT Scans for free (so nice). He found out that he has 4 herniated disks in his lumbar region. Present day- he has been on Vicodin for almost a year and now his doctor is cutting him off cold turkey. We can’t afford physical therapy w/o insurace and we try to do yoga together (dr’s orders) but he can’t move the next day- i actaully saw him cry (in 6 years, this was only the 2nd time i seen him cry) Does anyone know anything that might help him? I am at the end of my rope?!?

My suggestion would be to get a gravity bed or table (I am not sure what it is called) or an Ab Lounger (they are only about $100.) He can hang from it a few times a day to elongate the spine and take the pressure off the discs. I use an ab cruncher to alleviate the pain in my spine. (My Doctor has had me on Vicodin, in controlled doses and testing between every new prescription to keep me pain free.) I have Rheumatoid arthritis and Fibromyalgia.
The Gravity table or bed would allow the spine to open up a little and take the pressure off the discs. After stretching he could try using a elastic back support to keep it in place and avoid the pressure and shifting on the discs reoccurring for a while.
By taking 2 Ibuprofen alternately with 2 Excedrin will help some with the pain and the inflammation and swelling in the discs. At night he can take 2 Night time PM by Excedrin (I use the store brand) to kill pain to sleep.
God Bless and Good luck in solving the problem.

File for Disability Insurance or go to Social Services and sign up for Medical Assistance or call to the Department of Health and ask if they have an Insurance program. Check out the web. There are companies that sell pain medication but you might have to have a script from the doctor. It’s worth looking it up.
