I have pain in one side of my lower body. it starts on my butt cheek, then down the hamstring and back of knee and down to my calf muscle. Also my foot is somewhat numb. I have to walk with a limp, I can sit down but it hurts to get up. Also, laying in bed hurts when I turn over. I have been to the Dr. and there is possibility of orthopedic surgery. Has anyone heard of not electing to have surgery, and have chiropractor or physical therapy/massage fix the problem? What about acupuncture will that correct the bulging disk. I saw the MRI and can see where it is a bulge, but the Dr. looks like she might be pushing surgery because it costs more money. Anyone have the same problem(s)? Serious answers by people who have had this problem before or doctors, please. Dont answer if you think you might know or are just guessing.

My boyfriend of 6 years started getting crippling back pain. He dosen’t have any insurance. I know some really great people and Spectrum Diagnostics gave us 2 CT Scans for free (so nice). He found out that he has 4 herniated disks in his lumbar region. Present day- he has been on Vicodin for almost a year and now his doctor is cutting him off cold turkey. We can’t afford physical therapy w/o insurace and we try to do yoga together (dr’s orders) but he can’t move the next day- i actaully saw him cry (in 6 years, this was only the 2nd time i seen him cry) Does anyone know anything that might help him? I am at the end of my rope?!?

I injured my back about a year ago in a dance class. My right leg was extended behind me at about a 90 degree angle when what felt like an explosion on the left side of my lower back occurred. Immediately following the injury, I was unable to bend forward, back, walk, sit, move… This lasted for about a week and mobility slowly increased. I continued dancing as best I could for the remainder of the year and took the summer off. September rolls around and I’m sill in significant pain, especially when dancing (which is my major in school.) Pain is increased when bending forward and backward. Feels like my back is on fire and occasionally runs down my left leg. I had an x-ray and bone scan in September. Bone scan showed nothing and the x-ray showed some narrowing disc space. After fall quarter, I had an MRI done at home. The doctor said that I had a severe disc herniation and put on prednisone for a couple of weeks along with some physical therapy. I’m back at school now and have been referred to another sports medicine doctor here. He says the MRI is pretty standard. Minor bulge, but everyone has it. The pain seems to only get worse. It is definitely affecting how I dance…its hard when you can’t bend over. I’m not quite sure what I can do…or what I should do. Any suggestions? Please help.

And who wants to get addicted to Vicodin and Soma and still not get relief.

Im 17 years old and i was diagnosed with juvenile degenerative disk disease. I have cronic back pain because of this. I have been doing physical therapy and strengthening exercises to build up my muscles to support me back so i eventually wont have any more pain, but my orthapedic doctor said it’s going to take a while before i dont have any more pain. The problem is, because of the pain i have to take muscle relaxers and other medications just so i can sleep. I’m realy not in to perscription pain killers, they arent very good for me and i dont feel good when i take them. Does anyone know of any natural herbs or something that helps muscle pain and inflammation, or something that is calming? I tend to get really stressed when im in pain, which doesnt help. Any info would really help me!

I have been diagnosed by my family doctor as having two bulging disks. I have a lot of pain with them. I am going to a back sugeon tomorrow. I would really like to have some questions ready. I have already tried physical therapy twice and I currently take an anti inflamatory med and Darvocet as needed. Of course I will ask what are my non surgical options. I am only 26 years old and I have had this pain for years so surgery is not completely out of the question. I’ve heard there is not much they can do besides surgery and therapy.
Any ideas would be helpful! Thanks!!
